SDA and SIL: how they work together

SDA and SIL: how do they work together at Melba?

Why have SIL with SDA?

How we work with developers and housing providers

What to look for in an SDA + SIL home

Does the home suit your needs?

Think about accessibility, layout, and whether the space feels comfortable for you day to day.

Does it feel like a good fit?

This includes the setting, the people you’ll be living with, and the overall feel of the home.

Is the support tailored to you?

Your support should reflect your routine, preferences and what matters most to younot a one size fits all approach.

Can it grow with you?

As your needs or lifestyle change, your home and support should be able to adapt with you.

What’s the process with Melba?

1. Getting to know you

We start by getting to know you and understanding what you want your home and support to look like. This comes down to your routine, preferences, goals, and what’s important to you.

2. Exploring your options

Based on your funding and needs, we work with you to explore suitable SDA options and talk through what each option might look like in real life.

3. Finding the right match

If you’re considering shared living, we take care to match you with housemates who are a good fitconsidering routines, personalities and shared preferences.

4. Planning your support

We work with you to design your SIL supports so they feel personalised, flexible and aligned to your daily life.

5. Moving in and settling in

We support you through the transition, making sure you feel comfortable, supported and confident in your new home.

6. Ongoing support and adjustments

As things change, we stay connectedadjusting your supports if needed so they continue to work for you.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) and Supported Independent Living (SIL) are different types of NDIS supports that often work together. SDA funds the physical home itself, while SIL funds the daily support you receive inside the home.

While many people receive both SDA and SIL together, they are funded separately and don’t always have to go hand in hand. For example, you might receive SIL supports in a private rental or family home, or live in SDA housing while using a different support model that’s better suited to your situation (like Individualised Support Options).

Yes, your SDA and SIL provider can be the same provider. However, because the NDIS places a strong focus on choice and control, housing and support services must be kept separate to ensure there’s no conflict of interest.

This means you should have separate service agreements for your home and your daily supports, and you have the right to change SIL provider without automatically affecting your living arrangement.

Some people choose separate providers because it can offer more flexibility when making decisions about who supports them and where they live.

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is designed to be a long term living option for people with high support needs. While it’s generally considered a permanent support in your plan, you still have the flexibility to explore different living arrangements if your needs or preferences change over time.

Supported Independent Living (SIL) covers the support you receive at home, like help with daily routines, personal care, cooking, and building independence. It’s about building your capacity and supporting you to live your daily life in a way that works for you.

Yes, in some cases you can live with family in Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), depending on your individual situation and the home setup. This is something that’s carefully planned with your provider and the NDIS, to make sure it’s the right fit for everyone and supports your needs in the best way possible.
