Celebrating Pride Month: Where disability and LGBTQIA+ identities meet

June 2, 2025

By Melissa Webster

As rainbow flags unfurl across cities worldwide this June, Pride Month invites us all to celebrate love, authenticity and the rich diversity that strengthens our communities. At Melba, we recognise that Pride is a powerful opportunity to highlight how our various identities – including disability, sexuality and gender – intertwine to form our complete selves.

Our Rainbow Committee stands at the forefront of our commitment to LGBTQIA+ inclusion. This passionate team works year-round to celebrate and support LGBTQIA+ representation across all areas of our organisation – building a workplace and community where diversity is not only respected but actively celebrated. Through education, events, and policy development, our Rainbow Committee ensures inclusion remains central to everything we do.

The disability community and LGBTQIA+ community share parallel journeys – fighting for visibility, challenging stereotypes and demanding the right to live authentically. This intersection creates a unique space where many people navigate multiple aspects of identity simultaneously.

Research shows that LGBTQIA+ people with disability often experience “double discrimination”, yet this intersection is also a source of extraordinary resilience and perspective. Many report that navigating one marginalised identity helped them develop the strength to embrace another.

True inclusion means moving past tokenism toward authentic representation. We’re seeing progress, but still need more:

  • media that portrays LGBTQIA+ people with disability with the same depth and complexity as anyone else
  • accessible Pride events that consider mobility needs, sensory sensitivities and communication differences
  • intersectional advocacy that addresses how policy impacts people with overlapping marginalised identities.

At Melba, we envision communities where everyone can bring their full, authentic selves without having to compartmentalise aspects of their identity. A world where Pride celebrations are fully accessible and where disability events are fully inclusive of LGBTQIA+ identities.

This Pride Month, we invite you to celebrate all aspects of who you are and who your community members are. Whether you identify as LGBTQIA+, as a person with disability, both, or as an ally to these communities – your whole self belongs here.

After all, pride is about refusing to hide any part of who you are. And that’s something worth celebrating, this month and every month.
