Everything you need to know about the NDIS – Frequently asked questions

What’s the NDIS all about?

Think of the NDIS – short for National Disability Insurance Scheme – as a support system designed just for you. If you’re under 65 and living with a significant, long-term disability, the NDIS helps you get the supports you need to live life your way. It’s all about what matters to you – your goals, your independence, your life.

With the NDIS, you get funding to access the services, supports and tools that help you do more of what you love and tackle everyday life with confidence.

Want to dive into the details? Check out the NDIS website.

Who can access the NDIS?

You might be able to get NDIS support if:

You’re under 65 when you apply

You live in Australia and are a citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category visa from New Zealand

You have a permanent disability that makes daily life more difficult – such as moving around, communicating, or taking care of yourself

You or your child could benefit from early support to improve or maintain how things are going

Not sure if you’re eligible? The NDIS eligibility checker is a great place to start.

What can the NDIS help with?

Short answer: a lot!
Long answer: the NDIS funds reasonable and necessary supports that help you achieve your goals, build independence and feel more connected to your community.

Some examples of what NDIS might cover:

Help with everyday tasks, such as cooking or cleaning

Therapy or behaviour support

Assistive technology or equipment

Transport to get to work or activities

Learning new skills or getting a job

Support to modify your home or vehicle

Every person’s plan is different – because every person is different.

What won’t the NDIS pay for?

The NDIS isn’t designed to replace things such as Medicare, school fees, or rent – those are everyday costs that everyone faces. It also won’t fund anything that’s not related to your disability or something that’s unsafe.

What is an NDIS plan?

Your NDIS plan is all about you. It outlines your goals and includes the supports and funding to help you achieve them. Whether it’s learning to cook, building social skills, getting a job, or just feeling more confident – your plan maps out the path.

Most plans run for 12 months, but if your situation changes, you can ask for a review to adjust your supports sooner.

Can I update my NDIS plan if life changes?

Absolutely. If something big changes – like a health issue, new living situation, or a shift in your support needs – you can ask for a plan review. This is called a plan variation. Melba can guide you through it.

How can Melba help me with the NDIS?

At Melba, we’re with you every step of the way – from getting your first plan sorted to putting it into action and planning for the future. We’re experts in the NDIS and passionate about helping people with disability live the life they want.

We offer a wide range of services, all flexible and tailored to your needs. Not sure where to start? Book a free chat – face-to-face, over the phone, or online. Call 1300 696 352.

How is my NDIS funding managed?

You have three options – and you can mix and match:

NDIA-managed – the NDIS pays your providers directly

Plan-managed – a Plan Manager handles your budget and pays providers

Self-managed – you take control, pay invoices, and manage the admin

You can do all of one, or a mix depending on what works for you.

Can my family be part of the process?

Of course! Whether it’s your parents, siblings, partner, or a close friend – you can involve whoever you want. It’s your plan, your choice.

Is transport covered by the NDIS?

If your disability makes it hard to use public transport, you may be eligible for transport funding – like taxi fares or specialist driving lessons. The NDIS can also support you to build travel skills, such as learning how to catch a bus or even get your licence!

Can I switch disability support providers?

Yes! You’re not locked in. If you’re not happy with your current provider, or you want to try something new, you’re free to make a change. You deserve support that fits you.

Do I need NDIS funding to use Melba’s services?

Not always. If you’re not eligible for the NDIS, we might still be able to help. We accept other types of funding on a case-by-case basis – just get in touch and we’ll talk through your options. Call 1300 696 352.
