Who is eligible for Supported Independent Living?

If you’re exploring Supported Independent Living (SIL) through the NDIS, you might be wondering if you qualify. SIL is designed for people who need ongoing, significant support to live as independently as possible. It’s not just about where you live – it’s about the assistance you receive to manage daily tasks and build independence.

What does SIL cover?

SIL funding provides support services, not housing. Whether you live in a shared home, an SDA property, or another type of accommodation, SIL helps with:

  • Personal care: Assistance with showering, dressing, and grooming.
  • Household tasks: Help with cooking, cleaning, and managing your home.
  • Building life skills: Learning budgeting, grocery shopping and social skills.
  • Supervision and safety: Support workers available 24/7 or at scheduled times.

SIL is all about helping you live as independently as possible while ensuring you have the support you need.

Who can access SIL?

Not everyone is eligible for SIL. The NDIS assesses your level of support needs to determine if it’s the right fit.

You might qualify if:

  • You have significant support needs: Your disability affects your ability to manage daily life.
  • You require regular assistance: You need ongoing help with personal care, household tasks, or skill-building.
  • You have goals for independence: SIL supports those who want to develop daily living skills.
  • You can’t live completely independently: Minimal support wouldn’t be enough to meet your needs.
  • SIL funding is in your NDIS plan: The NDIS must approve SIL before you can access it.

What if I don’t qualify?

If you don’t meet SIL criteria, there are other NDIS-funded supports, such as:

  • Drop-in support: A support worker visits your home at scheduled times.
  • Personal care assistance: Help with tasks, such as dressing and meal prep.
  • Skill-building programs: Support to develop independence in daily life.
