NAIDOC: Celebrate Indigenous Culture

July 8, 2024

At Melba, we proudly celebrate NAIDOC Week, dedicated to recognising the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This week, runs from the first Sunday in July, aims to deepen our understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

This year’s theme, Keep The Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud, is a rallying cry to sustain progress, celebrate Indigenous identity with pride, and amplify their voices. It embodies resilience, visibility, and self-expression, demanding recognition and respect for the rich cultural tapestry of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

NAIDOC Week and Reconciliation Week both promote awareness and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures but have different focuses. Reconciliation Week, from 27 May to 3 June, marks milestones in the reconciliation journey, emphasising justice, equity and unity. NAIDOC Week, rooted in the civil rights movement of the 1920s and 1930s, celebrates identity, community and resilience, providing a platform for Indigenous voices to be heard and celebrated.

NAIDOC Week is a vibrant celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. We encourage everyone to find an opportunity to experience traditional dance and music performances, art exhibitions and storytelling sessions. These events educate, inspire and foster a deep appreciation for Indigenous heritage.

Community and Connection

NAIDOC Week fosters community and connection. It’s a time for families, friends and neighbours to come together, celebrate, share and learn. Across the country, there are numerous community gatherings, BBQs, and local festivals, strengthening bonds between all Australians.

NAIDOC Week is also an opportunity to reflect on the journey towards reconciliation and equality. The theme Keep The Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud calls on Australians to confront injustices and commit to actions that promote healing and justice.

At Melba, we listen to Indigenous voices, support Indigenous-led initiatives and advocate for policies that uphold the rights and dignity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Our Reconciliation Action Plan

Our commitment to reconciliation is embodied in our Reconciliation Action Plan. This plan outlines our strategic approach to advancing reconciliation within our sphere of influence, ensuring positive contributions towards equity and justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an important part of our RAP, and provides a dedicated time to celebrate, reflect, and reaffirm our commitment to walking side by side with Indigenous Australians.
