Yarning with Tim: National Reconciliation Week

May 28, 2025

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all of us to reflect on Australia, reflect on our history and ask ourselves, ‘what can we do to continue to support each other?’.

Taking a moment to place ourselves in someone else’s shoes, listening and reflecting could expose us to a new world that may be very far from what you currently know or have experienced.

Consider the feelings that come with wearing someone else’s shoes, the mountains and valleys that have been walked, the battles that have been fought, won or lost, the understandings found, the disappointments and achievements felt, the people that have been lost and gained, the scars that have been received and the scars that have been passed on, the resilience and endurance needed to continue walking in and wearing those shoes.

Reflecting on one’s past and history at large is an opportunity for us to understand the path that was taken to get to the present. Using this information from these understandings helps us to move forward into the future with knowledge of what worked and what didn’t work and make changes to make things better.

Let’s open ourselves to listening and acknowledging other’s stories. We have all been on many different tracks and taken many different paths in our journey to the present, but we are all human and our humanities for one another will keep us strong as a nation to take the right path.

There are stories to be heard and yarns to be said, open your hearts and let’s walk together with respect for each other, united in strength and moving towards full reconciliation for Australia.
