What’s the difference between Supported Independent Living and Specialist Disability Accommodation?
If you’re looking into NDIS housing options, you’ve probably seen the terms Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). They often come up together, but they’re not the same thing – they just work well side by side.
Let’s break it down:
Supported Independent Living
SIL is all about the support you get to help you live more independently. It’s not about the home itself – it’s the help you receive while living there.
With SIL, you can get support for things such as:
- Everyday tasks – cooking, cleaning, personal care, and other household jobs.
- Building life skills – help with things such as shopping, budgeting, and getting involved in your community.
- Safety and support – whether you need someone there around the clock or just at certain times, support workers can be on hand to help.
SIL can happen in all kinds of homes – including those built to SDA guidelines.
Specialist Disability Accommodation
SDA, on the other hand, is about the home itself. These are houses that meet a specific set of criteria for people with high support needs.
SDA homes include features such as:
- Extra-wide doorways and hallways.
- Ramps, hoists and other mobility aids.
- Accessible kitchens and bathrooms.
- Stronger building features for extra safety and comfort.
It’s about making sure your home is a good physical fit for your needs.
So, what’s the key difference?
SIL is the help you get to live independently. SDA is the house you live in – designed to support your physical needs.
Together, they create a living arrangement that’s safe, supportive and tailored just for you.
