Updates to NDIS Plan management: What you need to know

Recent changes to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) aim to improve transparency and fairness in how plans are managed. These updates are designed to ensure your funding arrangements align with your needs. 

Here’s a breakdown of the key changes and what they mean for you. 

Key changes  

As of Tuesday 4 March 2025, the following updates have been introduced: 

Risk assessment

The NDIS now has a framework to assess risks related to plan management. Risks are only flagged if there are concerns about missing safeguards or inadequate support.
When reviewing plan management requests, the NDIS will consider factors such as: 

  • A participant’s ability to oversee their funding 
  • The possibility of financial harm 
  • The likelihood of meeting NDIS requirements 

This approach ensures funding is managed effectively while prioritising participant needs. 

Support before changes

If a risk is identified, the NDIS will first explore additional supports or safeguards to help you retain control over their plan. Immediate changes to how funding is managed will only occur if necessary. 

Improved communication

If adjustments to plan management are required, the NDIS will explain the reasons behind the decision and provide an opportunity for you to ask questions or request a review. 

A smoother process  

The new guidelines clarify how you can update your NDIS plan. Changes can happen in two ways: 

  • Plan variations – Minor modifications that don’t require a full plan replacement, such as adjusting specific supports. 
  • Plan reassessments – A more detailed review that results in a completely new plan with a revised end date. 

These adjustments help ensure your plan stays aligned with your evolving needs.
