NDIS assessments are changing
November 20, 2025
Big changes are coming to the way people with NDIS plans have their support needs assessed. From mid-2026, people aged 16 and over will experience a new approach to planning that focuses on conversation rather than paperwork.
What’s changing?
At the moment, if you want to access the NDIS you often need to gather reports and evidence from doctors or allied health professionals to have your funding needs assessed. Under the new system, you will take part in a structured “needs assessment” interview with a trained assessor from the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).
During the interview, you will discuss 12 key areas of daily life, including mobility, communication, self care, domestic tasks, relationships and more. This will help assessors understand the level and type of support that’s right for you. If you have complex support needs, there may be additional assessments to ensure all aspects of what you need are considered.
When will it happen?
These changes will take effect from mid-2026, coinciding with plan reviews for people aged 16 and older.
Do you need to do anything?
For now, no. If you currently receive support from Melba, we will keep you informed as more details emerge, ensuring you have clear guidance and support throughout the transition. If you would like to talk to Melba about your support needs, we’re just a phone call or an email away.
What does this mean for you?
The aim of the new process is to make planning simpler, fairer and more accessible. By reducing the need for extensive paperwork, you can focus on conversations about what you want and need and the supports that will help you live life your way.
We know everyone likes to share information differently and this change may not suit everyone, if you have questions or concerns we encourage you to contact the NDIA directly.
