How SIL and SDA work together
When it comes to housing options under the NDIS, Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) are often paired together, working hand-in-hand to create a living arrangement that best supports your needs.
Think of it like this: SDA is your home, designed with all the accessibility features you need to live comfortably, while SIL is the support you receive while living there to help you with day-to-day tasks and make life a little easier.
At Melba, we offer SIL supports in different housing settings. This can mean living in your own home, or it could involve an SDA home if that’s the best fit for you. We also work alongside SDA providers and currently have some homes with vacancies, so if you’re looking for a place, we can help find the right fit.
The process: How to get SIL and SDA
Navigating the NDIS and finding the right housing and support might feel like a lot to manage, but you’re not alone – we’re here to guide you every step of the way. Here’s a simple outline of the process:
- Assessment of eligibility: The first step is determining whether you qualify for SIL, SDA, or both. During your NDIS planning meeting, your individual needs and goals will be assessed to see what type of support you’re eligible for. The Housing Hub has an SDA Eligibility Checker that may assist you in determining whether you could be eligible for SDA.
- Selection of appropriate housing and support providers: Once you know what you’re eligible for, you’ll need to decide on the best housing and support services that match your needs. This is where we come in! We have a range of existing SDA homes and also collaborate with new SDA providers to help you find a home that best fits your needs. We can also provide support in either an SDA home you have already sourced, or a private home you already live in.
- Developing a service agreement: After selecting your housing and support providers, the next step is creating a service agreement. This document will outline the specific supports you’ll receive, the goals you have and how your needs will be met. It ensures everyone is on the same page about what services you’ll get and how often.
- Regular reviews: As time goes on, your needs might change, so it’s important to have regular check-ins to ensure the support you’re receiving continues to align with your goals. These reviews ensure that your services remain relevant and effective.
