Arthur Creative takes music on the road with $8,000 grant

Melba’s Arthur Creative performers are about to spread their wings, thanks to an $8,000 Community Impact Grant from Ballarat City Council.
The money allowed Arthur’s performers to buy portable music equipment – such as speakers, keyboards, microphones, mixing desks and lighting – which will enable them to perform at venues they were unable to before.
The groups at Arthur Creative that stand to benefit most are Monday Cabaret, Wednesday Matchbox, Friday Boxhead, and Misfits, which helped with Arthur’s application.
Jenna, (pictured) who is a member of Misfits and Wednesday Matchbox, said she couldn’t wait to start performing.
“It’s so great to get this equipment,” she said. “We can now show off our talents and grow as live performers!”
Arthur Creative Senior Studio Coordinator Gabrielle Hingston said rehearsals were in full swing for a performance next month at a local aged care facility for people with dementia.
“The musicians have already learned a vast repertoire of swing music from the ’20s to the ’40s, which will bring back a lot of memories for that audience,” she said.
“Music has that incredible power to spark something in people, to bring joy, to make them feel seen and included.”
Following that is a major appearance at the Ballarat Twilight Christmas Market on 19 December, which attracts up to 15,000 people. It’s a high-visibility moment and one that Gabrielle sees as a turning point for Arthur’s performers.
“Up until now, our main audience has been Melba employees and families at our end-of-year showcase,” she said. “This is different. It’s strangers. It’s a real crowd. It’s a chance to build real stage confidence – and professional skills.”
