Duties for a disability support worker can vary depending on the person they’re supporting, but generally provide support people with physical, intellectual or developmental disabilities to live happy and fulfilling lives.
While support looks different for everyone, there are several core responsibilities that are commonly part of the role:
Supporting with everyday tasks such as showering, dressing, grooming, mobility, eating, or taking medication.
Assisting with things like meal preparation, grocery shopping, laundry, gardening, and maintaining a comfortable home.
For support worker positions, you don’t need prior experience or qualifications in disability because Melba will help you learn as you go. However, if you have a Certificate IV in Disability or an equivalent qualification this will be looked upon favourably.
A good disability support worker brings much more than just practical skills. They should be patient and emphatic, taking the time to understand your needs and how you like to do things. A sense of humour can also go a long way, as it builds a more relaxed and positive connection, making everyday moments more enjoyable.
Other qualities that are important include reliability, respectfulness and being emotionally aware. It’s also important a support worker can stay calm during challenging situations.
At the heart of good support is someone who makes you feel heard, respected, and genuinely comfortable being yourself.
