What’s the difference between Individualised Support Arrangements and Supported Independent Living?
When it comes to disability support, you’ve probably heard the terms community participation and one to one support. At Melba, we call it Individualised Support Arrangements (ISA) and it’s tailored just for you because at Melba you lead, we support. Whatever you call it ISA is sometimes confused with Supported Independent Living (SIL). While both help you live more independently, they offer support in different ways. But what exactly do they mean and how do you know which one is right for you? Let’s break it down!
What is ISA?
ISA is a flexible and personalised support plan designed around your unique needs, goals and lifestyle. It gives you greater control over your support, allowing you to shape it in a way that works best for you. It is typically delivered as a one-to-one support.
With ISA, you can:
- Decide how, when, and where you receive support – whether it’s morning, afternoon, or evening, you choose what fits your schedule.
- Choose your own support workers – be supported by people you feel comfortable with and trust.
- Mix and match different types of support – need help with daily tasks? Want support to attend social events? Looking for assistance to get to an appointment? Live in a home of your choice – whether you want to live alone, with family, or with housemates, the choice is yours.
Through these supports people can participate in their community and achieve their goals. Melba:
- Supports with travel and transport, participating in activities to look after your health, fitness and wellbeing, and to access clubs, activities and programs.
- Provides support to people with complex care requirements, including overnight assistance, support with personal care routines or live-in supports, supports with everyday tasks such as personal care including showering, dressing and getting ready for the day, or everyday tasks such as meal preparation, grocery shopping.
- Works with major Australian funders of disability supports including the NDIS, TAC, WorkCover, WorkSafe, DSOA.
ISA is all about customisation and flexibility. It allows you to take charge of your support and create a plan that aligns with your lifestyle and personal goals.
What is SIL?
SIL is designed for people who need regular, ongoing support with everyday tasks. This type of support is often provided in shared housing, but it can also be arranged in a private home if that’s what works best for you.
SIL support can include:
- Help with cooking, cleaning, and personal care – Whether it’s preparing meals, tidying up, or assistance with hygiene, SIL provides structured support.
- Assistance with developing daily living skills – This could mean learning how to budget, cook nutritious meals, or improve your independence in other areas.
- 24/7 or scheduled support – Depending on your needs, support can be available around the clock or at set times throughout the day.
- Supervision and help with social and community participation – Need support to attend events, meet new people, or engage in activities? SIL includes assistance with community involvement.
SIL is a structured and consistent support model. It’s designed to help you live independently while ensuring you have access to the support you need to stay safe, comfortable, and engaged in your community.
Key differences between ISA and SIL
Flexibility
ISA: Highly flexible, tailored to your needs.
SIL: Set support structure with a focus on daily living assistance.
Living situation
ISA: Any home setting (alone, with family, or housemates).
SIL: Usually in shared housing, but can be provided in private homes.
Control over support
ISA: You choose how, when, and who provides support.
SIL: Support is structured and typically managed by a provider.
Support type
ISA: A mix of different services (eg, therapy, community access, personal care).
SIL: Focuses on everyday living tasks and safety.
Which one is right for you?
Choosing between ISA and SIL comes down to how much support you need, what you need support with and how much control you want over your services.
- If you want a flexible, personalised plan that fits your lifestyle and gives you control over your support, ISA might be the best fit.
- If you need ongoing assistance with daily tasks and a more structured support system, SIL could be the right choice.
Both options aim to enhance your independence and quality of life, but the right choice depends on your personal needs and preferences.
