Friendships, relationships & intimacy

You deserve meaningful connections that make you feel valued, understood and safe – access to intimacy is your human right.

And, remember, intimacy isn’t only about romance – it’s about genuine human connection in all its beautiful forms.

What does intimacy mean?

We get asked this a lot, and it’s one of our favourite questions. Intimacy is about closeness, trust and feeling safe – no matter what form it takes. It can be:

  • a comforting hug from a friend when you’re feeling low
  • sharing your deepest thoughts with someone who truly listens
  • the gentle purring of a pet curled up beside you
  • the warmth of holding hands with a partner.

What is Melba doing?

At Melba, we believe everyone has the right to safe, respectful and meaningful connections – and we’re actively creating opportunities to support that. We run free Parent Workshops that help families and friends feel more confident talking about friendships, relationships and intimacy with their loved ones.

These sessions cover human sexual development, communication tips and how to respond to behaviours – all in a supportive, rights-based framework.

For people we support, we are about to launch a 12-week workshop series that offers a safe space to explore topics such as identity and healthy relationships.

Together, these programs aim to build knowledge, skills and confidence – empowering people to form relationships that are safe, respectful and fulfilling.

Workshops for people we support

Introduction to Friendships, Relationships and Intimacy (12-week program)

Starting October, explore topics that matter to you in a respectful, inclusive setting:

  • Learn about your body and identity.
  • Get answers to questions you’ve always had – and maybe never been able to ask.
  • Talk about sensitive topics in a safe, judgment-free space.
  • Learn about healthy relationships.

Please note this is only available to people receiving Melba supports.

Workshops for parents, family and friends

Talking With Your Loved Ones: Friendships, Relationships and Intimacy (2.5 hours)

Talking about intimacy can feel tricky – even risky. This workshop helps parents, families and friends feel more confident.* Topics include:

  • Introduction and setting the stage.
  • Human sexual development.
  • Tips for talking and finding “teachable moments”.
  • Responding to behaviours.

By the end of this workshop, you will have examined barriers to talking about intimacy, gained knowledge about intimacy and developmental disabilities, and acquired and practiced skills in communicating about intimacy.

Register your interest by emailing Kate: Kate.Taylor@melbasupport.com.au and we’ll arrange a delivery schedule that works for you. Workshops require a minimum of five people and are online or in-person, depending on demand.

*Available on demand for Victorian schools, peak bodies, community health organisations, councils and representative organisations.

“The honesty of discussing real-life situations and practical information about sexuality is refreshing. I also really appreciate the starting point that my daughter has the right to be a sexual being. I have been trying to find information like this for the last five years, so thanks.”
– Emma, Down Syndrome Victoria parent
