{"id":4789,"date":"2025-11-14T16:27:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T05:27:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.melbasupport.com.au\/?p=4789"},"modified":"2025-11-14T16:28:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T05:28:09","slug":"melba-endorses-social-services-regulator-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.melbasupport.com.au\/melba-endorses-social-services-regulator-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Melba endorses Social Services Regulator\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><\/p>\n\n\n    <div class=\"block--custom-layout block_2afa33e9272af4802504489d99fcb9d3 custom-wysiwyg blog-wysiwyg\" >\r\n        \r\n        <p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Melba Support Services is endorsing the current proposal to introduce a single regulator, the Social Services Regulator (SSR),\u00a0to oversee Victoria\u2019s social services network.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis\u00a0endorsement, however, comes with\u00a0a caveat.\u00a0That\u00a0people with a disability lead the way in this change, and that\u00a0disability is fully\u00a0recognised\u00a0and\u00a0evenly\u00a0weighted against other sectors within the social services space\u201d,\u00a0said Melissa Webster, Acting CEO Melba Support Services.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI would also raise\u00a0a sensitive topic that some people with\u00a0disability\u00a0have raised, and that is the\u00a0concern about the current operation of the SSR and its output. We\u00a0need to tread\u00a0carefully to make sure the SSR\u2019s promise is delivered upon and is resourced\u00a0appropriately.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cDisability support services are unique and the intricacies of what we do and the people we work with must be\u00a0recognised\u00a0and\u00a0appropriate protections\u00a0firmly put in place.\u00a0We must ensure there are associated regulators within this framework\u00a0that understand\u00a0the sector and the risks.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe\u00a0firmly believe\u00a0that the Social Services Regulator will reduce the instances\u00a0that we see all too often, that is people who have been stood down from\u00a0their positions\u00a0under allegations of serious abuse are able to simply go and work for another provider or in another sector.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cPeople with\u00a0disability\u00a0deserve better.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAt Melba,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we do everything by the book \u2013 we suspend\u00a0immediately, notify all authorities, investigate thoroughly, and cooperate fully with police. But then we discover the same worker is employed elsewhere, sometimes even before criminal charges are laid.\u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0gut-wrenching.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The introduction of a single Social Services Regulator\u00a0will not\u00a0diminish the role of the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission nor detract from\u00a0the\u00a0ongoing efforts\u00a0needed\u00a0toward\u00a0getting\u00a0a coordinated national strategy. Rather, it\u00a0represents\u00a0a constructive step in enhancing protections for people with disabilities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe believe a centralised regulator will\u00a0facilitate\u00a0the sharing and accessibility of information\u00a0regarding\u00a0violence, abuse,\u00a0neglect\u00a0and exploitation across the entire social services network, resulting in better safeguards for all.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cLate at night,\u00a0I&#8217;m\u00a0haunted by a simple question \u2013\u00a0would anybody want to be supported, or\u00a0have\u00a0a\u00a0family member be supported,\u00a0by\u00a0someone\u00a0under\u00a0suspension\u00a0for suspected abuse, simply because the paperwork\u00a0hasn&#8217;t\u00a0caught up? The answer is obvious,\u00a0yet our system operates as if it isn&#8217;t.&#8221;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Webster said the framework exists, the precedent is proven, and the need is\u00a0urgent,\u00a0but the\u00a0timing and\u00a0implementation must be considered and consistent.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe acknowledge there have been\u00a0limitations and issues to date that\u00a0are\u00a0causing great concern and\u00a0trepidation\u00a0but we strongly believe that working together to build a\u00a0centralised\u00a0approach is the first and most logical step.\u00a0Co-design must be\u00a0enacted to ensure that people with disability have a functional role in building how this framework will be put into action.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThere\u00a0must be adequate consultation with the disability community and an agreement that no single sector within the social services network is more\u00a0heavily weighted for protection.
