{"id":3407,"date":"2025-03-27T16:55:26","date_gmt":"2025-03-27T05:55:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.melbasupport.com.au\/?p=3407"},"modified":"2025-03-27T16:55:31","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T05:55:31","slug":"people-with-disability-among-most-targeted-in-rising-online-hate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.melbasupport.com.au\/people-with-disability-among-most-targeted-in-rising-online-hate\/","title":{"rendered":"People with disability among most targeted in rising online hate\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><\/p>\n\n\n    <div class=\"block--custom-layout block_cd964a6b73333e5ebfb278013d43cf20 custom-wysiwyg blog-wysiwyg\" >\r\n        \r\n        <p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A new report by the eSafety Commissioner has revealed a troubling increase in online hate targeting Australians from diverse backgrounds, with people with disability among the most affected.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The report, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fighting the Tide: Encounters with Online Hate Among Targeted Groups<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, found that 24 per cent of adults with disability, and\/or adults identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, sexually diverse, or linguistically diverse\u202fhave personally experienced online abuse, while 41 per cent have witnessed it. This reflects a broader trend, with online hate incidents rising from 14 per cent in 2019 to 18 per cent in 2022 across the Australian population.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant condemned the surge in online abuse, stressing that no one should suffer harassment because of their identity. She urged those affected to block perpetrators, report incidents, and seek support.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cNo Australian living in our community today should have to endure hateful abuse because of who they are,\u201d she said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study found that social media platforms are the most common sites of online hate, with most abuse coming from strangers. Despite the serious harm caused, fewer than half of victims take action against perpetrators.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Commissioner is calling on tech companies to enforce their policies more rigorously, improve reporting tools, and enhance transparency in tackling online hate.<\/span><span
