But in 2017, at the age of 49, his world changed dramatically.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI was a pretty adventurous sort of person,\u201d Jamie says. \u201cOutgoing, independent, travelled the world \u2013 and then, bang, in the space of 24 hours, my life turned upside down.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The stroke left Kelly permanently paralysed on the left side of his body, requiring lifesaving brain surgery to relieve pressure. Doctors told him he would never ride again.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But cycling remained a beacon of hope. \u201cI knew in the back of my head that I wasn\u2019t going to stop cycling because it had been my life for over 50 years, and I knew I had to get back on the bike to help my recovery,\u201d Jamie says.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The road to recovery, however, was not just physical. Jamie also faced significant challenges with housing, initially being placed in shared accommodation for people with disability. \u201cIt was horrific,\u201d he said. \u201cSharing a toilet and bathroom with someone you don\u2019t even know \u2026 you had no independence.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), Jamie discovered he was eligible for specialist disability accommodation, commonly known as SDA and SIL. With Melba\u2019s support, he moved into his own apartment, complete with a spare bedroom.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jamie\u2019s SIL plan gives him access to support when needed. \u201cIf I can do something, I\u2019ll do it myself,\u201d Jamie says. \u201cOtherwise, I\u2019ve got the option to call a carer that can give me a hand if need be. So having that as a backstop is fabulous.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Independent living has been transformative for Jamie, improving both his physical recovery and mental wellbeing. At the heart of his happiness is his recumbent bike, which he uses to stay active and connected to the sport he loves.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c(Being on my bike) is my happy place,\u201d Jamie says. \u201cI love getting out here. It makes me feel so happy.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element
