To have human rights embodied into our legislation is long overdue,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMelba is fully committed to protecting and upholding the human rights of all people, particularly those with disability. Human rights underpin everything we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayley was speaking after the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights delivered its report to Parliament. The report, which is the result of a year-long inquiry, sets out 17 recommendations, including that \u201cthe government introduce legislation to establish a Human Rights Act\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Hayley was supported by Monash University\u2019s Professor of Law Paula Jerber and Professor, Faculty of Law Melissa Castan, who argue a federal Human Rights Act in Australia would \u201cgo a long way to fixing our current unequal and lopsided approach to protecting human rights\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustralia needs comprehensive laws that address the rights of all people across the country,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree of Australia\u2019s eight states and territories have such acts, which means rights protection in Australia is a geographic lottery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lens.monash.edu\/@politics-society\/2024\/06\/10\/1386762\/an-inquiry-has-recommended-australia-legislate-a-human-rights-act-heres-why-we-need-one\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">You can read more on why Australia should legislate a Human Rights Act here.<\/a><\/p>\n\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Melba CEO Hayley Dean says she supports calls for the Australian Government to establish a Human Rights Act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about time that we as a democratic developed nation has a national Human Rights Act.
