{"id":1350,"date":"2024-07-26T14:05:41","date_gmt":"2024-07-26T04:05:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/melbasupport.wpenginepowered.com\/?p=1350"},"modified":"2025-03-21T11:42:30","modified_gmt":"2025-03-21T00:42:30","slug":"ndis-taskforce-move-compromises-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.melbasupport.com.au\/ndis-taskforce-move-compromises-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"NDIS Taskforce Move Compromises Safety"},"content":{"rendered":"    <div class=\"block--custom-layout block_8c5666c21a7cf59d0dcd2aaae6eb0601 custom-wysiwyg blog-wysiwyg\" >\r\n        \r\n        <p>Reports that the NDIS taskforce has rejected a proposal to make it mandatory for all NDIS service providers to be registered was \u201cdeeply disappointing\u201d, Melba CEO Hayley Dean said today.<\/p>\n<p>The Herald Sun reported on Tuesday that the taskforce, set up by NDIS Minister Bill Shorten, planned to block the initiative, one that Shorten had deemed an essential part of the $42 billion NDIS reform.<\/p>\n<p>Shorten had tasked the group with addressing the unchecked operation of unregistered NDIS businesses that receive taxpayer money without adequate oversight or accountability.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal followed a major NDIS review released in December, which recommended all businesses within the scheme \u201cshould be enrolled or registered\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, the newspaper reported that the taskforce said the proposal would cause \u201csignificant distress to the disability community\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Hayley said the taskforce\u2019s move \u201clacked simple logic\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are close to 160,000 unregistered providers that do not have to undergo the rigorous checks and balances placed on the almost 18,000 (in 2022) registered providers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are not required to complete independent external audits, screen staff for criminal history, or prove to the government that their staff have the right skills and competencies. This is particularly alarming when supporting a person with complex needs, where there is no independent oversight or advocacy for those most at risk. This compromises the well-being and safety of the people the NDIS was set up to support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a registered NDIS provider, we welcome the rigorous screening and independent oversight. It certified our credentials as a credible, trustworthy and accountable organisation supporting thousands of Victorians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper reported that the taskforce \u201cproposes that not all providers &#8230; should be registered\u201d, warning of \u201csignificant, unintended consequences of this approach, including that it would monitor the decisions of NDIS participants when spending their funding\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Hayley said common sense dictated that \u201call organisations working in the disability sector should be heavily scrutinised\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA bartender needs more certification than an unregistered NDIS service provider,\u201d One needs an RSA (responsible service of alcohol) to serve a beer but can support someone to have a shower or go to the toilet with no safety screening or training. It\u2019s ludicrous she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI fail to see what the \u2018significant, unintended consequences\u2019 of making it mandatory for NDIS providers to be registered would be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReforms of the type Mr Shorten is trying to implement are long overdue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At a recent press conference, Shorten stated, \u201cIt&#8217;s not acceptable to have an unregistered provider just working without any accountability\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In March, he added, \u201cUnregistered providers operate with little to no visibility of what they provide, or even if they deliver the services they charge for.
